Our Story

Originally built in the late 1880s as a bakery, the front of the property was rebuilt in the Art Deco style in 1939 by baker Charles Braithwaite and operated as a corner store until the 1960s. Now, the rear bakery has been reimagined and rebuilt as a spacious and private one-bedroom courtyard apartment designed to appeal to luxury-loving explorers, travellers and dreamers.

Together with JAWS Architects (who also designed Pumphouse Point) we have created a stylish and sophisticated retreat that makes the perfect base from which to explore Hobart and beyond. Alternatively, stay home, curl up and read a book by the gas fire or luxuriate in the private courtyard bath.

The space

A towering vaulted ceiling creates a feeling of light and spaciousness in the living room where lime-washed walls contrast with the reclaimed brick fireplace and rough-hewn timber floors. Relax on the expansive velvet day bed - or plan your next adventure. Enjoy your favourite streaming service on the smart TV or take advantage of the stable wifi to browse or do some remote work. From the glass-cornered dining area, look out onto the private courtyard oasis that’s sun-drenched and ideal for your morning coffee or pre-dinner drink.

Spend the morning in the king-size bed, dressed with dreamy linens and flanked by foot-warming English Leicester sheepskins from a local Derwent Valley farm, before starting your day with a cup of tea or stepping out into your private courtyard. The generously sized bedroom is anchored by a textural brick wall of “Hobart Reds” salvaged from the original building.

The bathroom offers a walk-in rain shower with raw brass tapware and heated floor - which is all part of Braithwaite’s understated luxury, along with 100% cotton towels and quality toiletries.

Explore

Art, history and natural beauty are all available in Hobart and Braithwaite is just 2km (a 15-minute walk or 5-minute drive) from Salamanca.  Take the ferry to MONA, our world-class art gallery, enjoy the views from the top of kunanyi/Mt Wellington, browse the stalls of local makers at Saturday’s Salamanca Market or take a walking tour of the historic waterfront. There are surprises around every corner.

Day tripping

Braithwaite is the perfect base from which to explore everything Southern Tasmania has to offer - from the picturesque Huon Valley, to the dramatic Tasman Peninsula, to antique hunting in New Norfolk, wine tasting in Richmond or a day flight to the remote and beautiful South-West National Park. Tasmania is known for its natural beauty and whether you prefer a bush walk or a scenic drive, the opportunities are abundant.

Dining out

Hobart is famous for its vibrant restaurant scene and Braithwaite is just minutes away from some of the city’s best eateries. There are also plenty of options if you’d like to venture a little further afield, including Gourmet Traveller’s Best Destination Restaurant of 2023 - Van Bone, which is owned by the designer of Braithwaite! We review restaurants for a living and provide you with a comprehensive list of our current, insider favourites.

Eating in

If you’d like to stay home, Braithwaite has a brand new, compact, fully equipped kitchen (no dishwasher) with an induction cooktop and Bertazzoni combination oven. Our pantry is stocked with black and herbal tea, ground coffee, hot chocolate, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. Coffee-making facilities include a plunger and stovetop espresso maker. Collect local delicacies on your travels or Hill St Grocer (an excellent gourmet supermarket, butcher and greengrocer) is just up the road and Uber Eats also delivers.

Accessibility

Braithwaite is all yours and shares a courtyard wall with the main house (the former corner store). The residents of the main house are quiet and respectful and we ask the same of our guests.

We are an inclusive stay and all guests of any background or community are welcome in our space although two steps up from the street limits our ability to host those with limited mobility. The property is heritage-listed, so our capacity to change that is constrained.

Please note that Braithwaite is not suitable for children or pets.
